An old Calvé peanut-butter television commercial that aired in 1992 and introduced two novelties in the Netherlands: it was the first commercial with a duration of 75 seconds (in stead of the usual 20 seconds) and the first commercial featuring a custom-made computer game (later known as advergame).
In the commercial, a young boy disappears into a computer game to get a jar of Calvé peanut-butter for his girlfriend. The Peanut-butter Power Game was created by Team Hoi, existing of coder Reinier van Vliet, musician Ramon Braumuller and designer Metin Seven, by assignment of the Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency, via two Amsterdam-based creative agencies: Top Drawers and Comic House.
The Peanut-butter Power Game was created on the Commodore Amiga computer, and we had to work with very limited computer capacity, such as only 16 colors for the graphics. Included in the Archive's file directory are game graphics, screenshots of the TV commercial, a rough concept sketch by Metin, some Dutch articles covering the project, and the soundtrack, made by Ramon in our own Digital Mugician Amiga music editor. The track is included as an MP3 audio file and as the original Digital Mugician music module file.
Because of a tight deadline, the main character was a variation upon the main character of a game we had started developing at the time, called Moon Child. Please note that the graphics were made on and for a CRT-type screen, slightly blurring the pixels, as opposed to the sharp displays of today.
Following the commercial, the game was played by kids in the most popular Dutch children's TV show of the 1990s: Telekids, presented by Irene Moors. Those who managed to complete the game won their height in stacked jars of Calvé peanut-butter. The game was also played by kids on events of other Unilever subsidiaries, displayed on a peanut-yellow colored television screen. Amiga 600 computers were purchased to make the game available for the different campaign applications.
The young girl who starred in the commercial would later become well-known in the Netherlands as actress and presenter Lieke van Lexmond, starring in several television shows, including a popular daily Dutch TV soap called Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden (Good Times, Bad Times). The Calvé commercial was Lieke's debut.
We attended the shoot of the commercial's live action part and I remember that Lieke performed quite smoothly, while the boy kept forgetting his text, probably because of nervousness. 🙂 Fun fact: the game wasn't actually played by the child actors, but was played by Reinier and Metin behind the scenes of the commercial recording.
In 2018, the Peanut-butter Power Game earned a place in the national Dutch Games Canon. Sadly, the game and its source code was lost in time due to a HDD crash, but there is a chance the game has survived in a Calvé / Unilever archive, as dedicated Amiga 600 computers with the game were used for the different campaign applications of the game at the time.

TEAM HOI
Team Hoi was one of the first game development teams in the Netherlands, existing of Reinier van Vliet (game design and code), Metin Seven (game design and graphics) and Ramon Braumuller (audio). Team Hoi was active from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, creating demonstrations, commercial games and three music editors (SIDmon, Digital Mugician and Syntrax) for multiple 16-bit computer systems, such as the Commodore Amiga, CD32 console, MS-DOS and Windows.
The productions were distributed internationally on traditional media: diskettes and CD-ROMs, predominantly before the dawn of the public internet, and reviewed in many major computer magazines around the world, including The One, Amiga World, Amiga Format, CU Amiga, Amiga Mania, The Games Machine and Zzap 64 / Amiga.
Among the publishers of Team Hoi's productions was the legendary Thalamus, publisher of the classic Commodore 64 games Armalyte, Creatures, Delta, Quedex and Sanxion.
In the early years — before their hit game Hoi — Team Hoi was named Soft Eyes (a.k.a. Softeyes), and included a fourth partner: Pieter ("Peter") Opdam. After the first Soft Eyes games Pieter emigrated to the UK to work for Team 17, known from the Worms game, among other titles.
During the Soft Eyes period Reinier, Metin and Ramon were also active in the Amiga demo scene as members of the Digital Force International (DFI), and created a range of music demos featuring whimsical a cappella raps that became widely known among Amiga users.
In the later years, coder Peter Schaap took care of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 conversions of Clockwiser, released in 1994.
